Abstract

One of the main goals of the Romanian statistics presented in the Strategy of statistical system development is to collect adequate and accurate statistical information with the least possible burden on businesses and to offer to the users statistical information that they need for their activity.
During the last years, the National Institute of Statistics (NSI) made all the necessary efforts in order to ensure the continuity but also the transformation of the statistical activity and its coherence. Over the time, the activity was focused on controlling and reducing the burden on the economic players, at the same time ensuring high quality information for the users.
The paper briefly presents the concerns and successes of the NIS in the recent years in reducing respondent burden, while expanding significantly the range of the available statistics. Most of these reductions have been achieved through the use of administrative data and through the use of a broad range of smarter statistical methodologies, including methodologies aimed at improving relationships with respondents.
The NIS expects to make still further gains in this respect in the coming years, as the full potential of the recent initiatives becomes realized.
