FOOD SECURITY IN ROMANIA
Abstract
The paper evaluates the Romanian population's food security in the light of FAO and World Bank different criteria, which determine food security on the basis of a critical threshold.
The statistical data available since 1990 until 2001 indicate that the population's food security is an unsolved problem in Romania. The main problem for achieving food security is access to food. Although the food security is not threatened as regards food availability, the effective food demand is significantly restricted by the low purchasing power.
Key words: food security, nutritional risks, poverty, effective food demand, food consumption.
